No Claim of Insanity for Domestic Terrorism

A defendant in a recent IL case expressed his mental fitness to stand trial for his alleged domestic terrorist plot in 2012.  Although it is common to believe that people who engage in terrorism suffer from some form of mental illness, it is more myth than fact.  While professing to want to kill in the name of jihad, as this suspect had allegedly done, psychosis isn’t a necessary precursor for terrorist behavior.  Indeed, it isn’t necessary for most criminal offenses, under which such an act legislatively falls.
